Greetings from the Board – March 2026

Vistoso Board of Directors Logo
Matt Wood, VCA President

Greetings from the Board:

Please Vote in the VCA election!  There are two openings for single family representation and 5 Rancho Vistoso members running for those Board positions.  We also have board positions for a commercial director and one for other-than-single -family, although we only have one candidate running for each position.  In addition, we need to pass the minutes and the IRS document.

You have until April 3rd to fill out the form to join one of our committees.  So far the participation has been somewhat underwhelming.    Click HERE to download the Committee Volunteer form.

We had a number of questions (and complaints) about commercial vehicles parking in our neighborhoods.  The Board issued a new resolution at the January 29th meeting to clarify that commercial vehicles are not allowed to be parked, kept or stored in the community.  The following link defines what is considered to be a commercial vehicle (https://ranchovistosohoa.com/resident-information/policies-and-resolutions/)

The invitation for Bids on the Vistoso Trails Nature Preserve Pond Project has been advertised.  The bids are due March 20th.  We are getting closer to having our beloved pond back on the Vistoso Trails Nature Preserve.

One last time:  PLEASE VOTE IN THE RANCHO VISTOSO ELECTION FOR NEW BOARD MEMBERS

Matt.

P. S. – Don’t forget that the next garage/yard sale event is April 11th from 7 am to 2 pm.  We have 2 garage sale days each year one in the spring and one in the fall and those are the only days garage/yard sales are allowed in Rancho Vistoso.

Did You Know – March 2026

March Madness refers to the annual NCAA Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, which have a history rooted in a 1939 high school event in Illinois before a CBS broadcaster used the term for the college tournament in 1982. The tournament has expanded over the decades from a small field of eight teams in 1939 to the current 68-team knockout bracket format.

Tournament format and origins

  • The first tournament: The inaugural NCAA men’s tournament was held in 1939 with an eight-team field, organized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The Oregon Ducks won the first title by defeating Ohio State.
  • Expansion through the years: The tournament field gradually expanded from 8 to 16 teams in 1951, 32 teams in 1975, and 64 teams in 1985. The current 68-team format, which includes the “First Four” play-in games, was established in 2011.
  • “March Madness” nickname: The phrase “March Madness” was first coined by Illinois High School Association official Henry V. Porter in 1939 to describe the state’s high school basketball tournament. The term became associated with the NCAA tournament after CBS broadcaster Brent Musburger used it during coverage in 1982.

Notable historical highlights

  • Early rivalries: In its early years, the NCAA tournament competed for prestige with the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), which was founded a year earlier in 1938 and was initially more popular.
  • Landmark championship games:
    • 1966: Texas Western (now UTEP) defeated Kentucky to become the first team with an all-black starting lineup to win the championship.
    • 1979: The championship game featured future NBA rivals Larry Bird (Indiana State) and Magic Johnson (Michigan State), drawing significant national attention.
    • 1985: An 8th-seeded Villanova team defeated top-seeded Georgetown in a major championship upset.
  • Major upsets: The tournament is known for its upsets, also called “Cinderella stories”. Two of the most significant upsets in the men’s tournament include:
    • 2018: 16-seed UMBC became the first No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed, beating Virginia.
    • 2023: Fairleigh Dickinson joined the club by also defeating a No. 1 seed (Purdue).

Selection process and logistics

Revenue and impact: The tournament has become a massive commercial success for the NCAA, generating billions of dollars in revenue from media rights, merchandise, and ticket sales.

Critter of the Month for March 2026

Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty

3 Bobcat cubs checking out the action below.

LIVING WITH BOBCATS

Bobcats are carnivorous and feed almost exclusively on meat. They tend to hunt and travel in areas of thick cover, relying on their keen eyesight and hearing to locate prey. Bobcats are patient hunters; they spend much of their time waiting, watching and listening. Once prey is located, a bobcat will stalk within range and ambush its quarry. Although their principal prey is cottontail rabbits and jackrabbits, bobcats also take small mammals such as mice, pack rats and squirrels, birds and occasionally larger mammals, including the young of some big-game species such as deer and pronghorn. Snakes and lizards are also part of the bobcat’s diet.

Do you know an exceptionally cute critter in your community? Share the love and give your furry, feathered, or scaled friend the spotlight they deserve. Submit a photo of a critter whether it’s your personal pet or a wild animal you’ve observed on the trail. Please attach a photo and a brief description of your critter to askvca@ranchovistosohoa.com with the title ‘Critter of the Month’ for a chance to be featured in next month’s newsletter

A Friendly Reminder Regarding Wildlife

We live in the beautiful Sonoran Desert and share our neighborhoods with the wildlife that has been here long before our homes. Coyotes, bobcats, javelinas, mountain lions, rattlesnakes, gila monsters, and birds of prey can pose a danger to humans and their pets. We must be aware of our surroundings and avoid confronting these animals. Maintain your distance and do not behave in a threatening manner. If you encounter a rattlesnake, please call 311 immediately to have it removed. Also, do not feed or supply water to wild animals since they may become more brazen.

Fire Safety Tips

fire hydrant, fire, water, safety, emergency, valve, nature, fireman, equipment

Install and Test Smoke Alarms: Place alarms on every level of the home, outside sleeping areas, and inside bedrooms. Test them monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.

Practice Safe Cooking: Never leave stovetops unattended, especially when cooking with grease. Keep cooking areas clean and free of flammable items like towels or curtains.

Maintain Electrical Safety: Avoid overloading outlets and extension cords. Inspect cords regularly for fraying or damage and plug major appliances directly into wall outlets.

Manage Heating Hazards: Keep space heaters at least three feet away from combustible materials such as curtains, furniture, or bedding.

Store Flammables Securely: Keep matches, lighters, and candles out of reach of children and away from heat sources.
